Mavericks news: There are a lot of reasons to be excited about the Dallas Mavericks heading into this season, and one of them is the tandem of Rookie of the Year winner Luka Doncic and the returning Kristaps Porzingis. These two will be the franchise’s cornerstones as they usher in the post-Dirk Nowitzki era.
Future Hall of Famer Steve Nash believes that the Mavs will be a really good team this season because of the Doncic and Porzingis. The one-time Maverick said that both guys are extremely talented and that they are capable of becoming difference makers for the team on a nightly basis.
“I think it’s a super exciting time to be a Mavericks fan and to play and work for the Mavericks. You’ve got two players that are incredible difference-makers, if they can form a bond and a chemistry and an understanding. They both fit the modern game extremely well, you have some talented players around them as well, some role players that are happy with their role and they can exceed expectations at their role and not necessarily feel like they need more, which could kill a chemistry, kill a team and its chemistry.
“It’s going to be exciting to watch them develop together this year.”
Luka and KP has drawn comparisons to Nash and Nowitzki, who played together for the Mavericks during the early 2000s. They weren’t able to lead the team to a championship, but they were really fun to watch. It is unclear how good Doncic and Porzingis will be on the court, but if they will be able to quickly build chemistry, avoid injuries, and stay with the franchise long-term, Dallas will be one of the league’s top contenders in the near future.
But the Mavs aren’t in a hurry and they aren’t putting a lot of pressure in their young stars. This season, their primary goal is to make the playoffs. It’s not going to be easy, considering that they are in the Western Conference, but with Doncic and Porzingis leading the way, the sky's the limit for this team moving forward.
